The Concept of Islamic Ethnopedagogy: Transformation and Adaptation of Local Culture in Islamic Education in Indonesia

Islamic ethnopedagogy is an educational approach that integrates Islamic values with local wisdom in the learning process. This approach positions local culture as a source of values, knowledge, and educational methods that align with Islamic principles. Historically, the idea of Islamic ethnopedagogy originated during the Islamization of the Indonesian archipelago in the 13th century, when scholars and missionaries such as the Walisongo adapted local traditions—such as arts, language, and social systems—into Islamic teaching and education. This integration reflects the principle of al-‗urf al-shahih (good custom that does not contradict Islamic law) within Islamic jurisprudence. This article aims to explain the fundamental concept of Islamic ethnopedagogy, outline its relevance in the context of Islamic education in Indonesia, and offer strategic implementations for educational institutions. Using a qualitative approach and literature review method, this study draws from works on Islamic education, educational anthropology, and ethnopedagogy. The findings indicate that Islamic ethnopedagogy plays a vital role in shaping contextual and humanistic education deeply rooted in national culture. By integrating Islamic values and local culture, education can produce a generation that is both religious and nationally grounded.
